Backstory
Alia’s first act of rebellion wasn't against authority - it was against a video game's code. While other kids were trying to beat high scores, she was breaking games, finding exploits that let her finish levels in seconds. Speed running became an obsession, and each new record was a chance to prove she was smarter than the developers. But finding flaws in game code was just the beginning. By thirteen, she'd graduated to cracking security systems, not for any noble cause - just because people said she couldn't.
She was drafted by a government-run tech academy where gifted kids were trained to become corporate drones. They thought they could harness her talent, shape her into something useful for their own gain. Instead, she used their own systems to drain the academy's accounts, crash their networks, and expose every secret she could find. She didn't just burn bridges - she rigged them with explosives and watched them crumble.
These days, Alia is a ghost in the machine, selling secrets to whoever's got the credits. Corporate espionage, government intel, private data - it's all just currency to her. She's not playing Robin Hood; she's playing the whole system for her own gain. The authorities are forever chasing her, but every attempt to catch her just gives her another chance to humiliate them publicly. Each failed pursuit just proves what she's always known - she's several steps ahead of everyone else, and she makes sure they know it.
Personality
Sharp, ruthless, and unapologetically confident - Alia carries herself with the assurance of someone who knows exactly how capable she is.
She's been called everything from a criminal to a prodigy, but labels mean nothing to her. In her mind, she's just someone who saw through the lies of a world that was rigged from the start. She doesn't hide her disdain for those who follow the rules - in her eyes, they're just sheep who never questioned the fence.
Alia has, as quite a few have put it, ‘main character energy’ - she looks out for numero uno and she’s got no problem telling people exactly how she feels. As a result, she doesn’t have many friends and to be honest, she likes it that way. She does what she wants when she wants and she’s not going to let anyone stop her.
Her safe houses are scattered across the city, each one a nest of screens and circuitry. The walls are covered in the digital equivalent of trophy heads - logos of systems she's cracked, security badges she's corrupted, and a running tally of how many "unbreakable" codes she's shattered. Every victory feeds her ego, every successful hack confirms what she's always believed - that their security, like their power, is just an illusion.
Relationships
Her closest companion is Byte, a robot she built to keep her company in the life of a hacker. The bot speaks in a language of beeps and chirps that only she understands. In a world where she can't trust anyone, Byte is the exception - the only entity she can rely on completely because she created it herself. Some might call it sad that her only real friend is a machine, but Alia would say that's exactly the point - machines don't lie, they don't betray, and they don't disappoint.
Most people who cross her path quickly learn to keep their distance. It's not just her sharp tongue or her hair-trigger temper - it's the cold certainty in her eyes that says she could destroy your whole world with a few keystrokes, and she wouldn't lose a minute's sleep over it.
BEHIND THE MUSIC
Composed by Marcus Hedges
Topline and Vocals by DEVMO
Mastered by John Elleson-Hartley | MUSIKLAB
I knew I wanted to do something a bit different for Alia’s theme. Like some of the other Resonance themes, this was new territory for me genre-wise and for a while, I wasn't completely sure about the direction I wanted to take with vocals. I just knew the energy I wanted was something similar to Ashniko, Grimes and Royal and the Serpent.
Luckily, I stumbled upon Devmo's work and I instantly heard the attitude and confidence that embodied Alia’s character. She genuinely hit it right out of the park on the first draft and suddenly the track felt like it had its missing piece.
Originally, this track didn't have any orchestra but after getting some valuable feedback from, Jesse Zuretti, I realized that I should really punch up the intensity and lean into the sound that I've been developing for Resonance. I'm really pleased with the end result - I think it suits Alia’s character perfectly.
